This tune by the Cro-Mags seemed appropriate to describe training lately. Remember, all the gains you get in the gym are not permanent. Everything in weightlifting is cyclical. Everything you get, you gotta give back and then work even harder to get that extra 1%. In any case, I’m glad to be back to moving how I’m used to moving.

So I know I haven’t been all that active on here lately but I just paid 25 bucks to renew this blog so I’m damn well going to use it now that things have calmed down a bit.

One thing that I can objectively say is helping all my lifters across the board is the mandatory prep and corrective exercises I now include within our training schedule. I’m not going to list any of my favorite exercises because I feel like they deserve their own blog post. But as a general rule of thumb, uncovering your weaknesses and including work to correct them VS. doing what feels good or what feels most rewarding is one of the main differences between training for sport and training like a bro. Right now the team is transitioning from building a healthy foundation towards building absolute strength.
Maxing out feels good. Snatches feel good. Bro-ing out and working hard feels good. having a system in place that at least has the foresight to look from now to a few months from now does NOT necessarily feel good.
Right now we’re on track to peak at the American Open. I should be taking a good sized group with me and the whole gang is stoked that it’s taking place right in our backyard.
Trust the process.

There is a difference between training for weightlifting competitions and ignorantly throwing weights above your head like a bro. There’s nothing wrong with one or the other, I just want people to know the difference.
I’ve decided to lift at the Caffeine and Kilos Invitational which is the weekend of the 19th. It’s honestly one of my favorite meets of the year to compete in. It’s just that the timing is a little awkward since I haven’t really been doing full-time training for lifting since I got back from Nationals. I’ve been working on my weaknesses and building up my base for the AO like Im supposed to. I just decided to take a nice little BRO-detour so I can BRO out with my BRO’s at the C&K meet.

The team and I are finishing up a high volume cycle focused on correcting muscular imbalances, increasing fitness and giving us a proper base going into the American Open. As far as my own training goes, it’s been getting increasingly difficult to get back into the swing of training after a big meet. Emotionally it takes a bigger toll than it used to. Today was actually the first % based workout that I was able to hang with the rest of the team.

Clean and jerks went OK. I only made like 4. I blame it on me doing my squats in the morning session beforehand.
EMOMs aren’t all that common for us but this video is a good example of the team training cycle right now.

Check out this charitable event going on at Solfire Yoga studio in Midtown.
Yoga is difficult to implement into a high volume training schedule however it is something I try to do in between training cycles following a big meet. I’m going to be doing at least a handful of sessions before I jump back into HEAVY training again. The team and I will also be doing more bodybuilding and general fitness stuff for the next 6-8 weeks. I’m calling it Olybuilding and you have to pay me a nickel every time you use say it, think it or do it.
I’d like to get out and do some winter hiking at some point but I’ve been exceedingly busy lately. If you’ve tried to get in contact with me at some point this week, I promise I’ll get back to you. Someday. Maybe.

Remember that track I said I liked the other day? Here’s some miscellaneous training footage set to that song. I got most of my yamdancers on video though i did miss a few epic moments pretty much from everybody. As far as my training is concerned, my legs are not the strongest they’ve ever been but my lifts are coming back nicely. I think I may actually peak at the right time this year; when it counts.

I’m 3 days out from competing at the 2nd C&K Invitational at McClellan Airforce Base. A team functional fitness event will be taking place throughout the day and the weightlifting invitational session begins at 4:30 this Saturday. If you’re in the area, come check it out. Spectator admission is 5 bucks but honestly it is well worth it as 25 of the best lifters in the country will be competing.
This meet personally means a lot to me. It was here last year that I was able to turn my weightlifting career around, getting a PR total and then following it up with my most productive training cycle ever. I’m not at my peak, but obviously I’m hoping for similar results this year. At the very least, I’m excited to be competing again and sharing the platform with some of the best.
I hit 140/170 this past Friday which is the most I’ve done since Nationals. Honestly, that’s a huge relief because I don’t have it in me to open up with any less. I’m not so much concerned with what everybody else is doing, so I’ll go ahead and say that at minimum I’m looking for a 320 total and at maximum I’ll be looking for 335. Anywhere in the middle will represent a decent day for me.
I recorded a good chunk of my meet prep over the past 3 weeks but I think I might go ahead and save the footage until afterwards so I can throw the contest lifts at the end of the video.

Yesterday is the first day that I’ve been able to hit my 90%s on the same day since my break from lifting (135/165). It took longer than I wanted it to but as we all know progress comes when it decides to. Plan all you want, but your body doesn’t understand (sets X reps = progress.)
I actually wan’t supposed to hit 90%s yesterday. Generally, I’ll never deviate from the training schedule because it sets a bad example for the team. Why would they believe in something that I don’t believe in myself. The last two weeks I felt have been an exception from this rule because I basically had 3 weeks to get back in contest shape. I did my squats at my target weight in the morning. 2×1 bsq at 240kg. It’s a weight that crushed me on Monday as I went for a daily max x3. Then in the afternoon I went in thinking if I was physically able to stick to the plan, it would be a success. The plan was 10×1 snatch at 120kg and 10×1 clean and jerk at 145kg; both are my 80%s. I hit 5 of each at my 80%s then hit 3 more at my 85% and a couple at 90%. I only missed one snatch at 85% and one jerk at 90%. I went for an eleventh rep on clean and jerk at 170kg which I clarked but overall I was happy with how the day went.
My long lost training partner, Alex Lee came back. He’s kind of like Batman because he only shows up when you need him the most. I took his presence as a sign.
